Respect For Marriage Coalition, Respect for Marriage Coalition-Stowell
While holding his wife, Berta, former Marine Corporal Craig Stowell states that as Americans “we believe in freedom” and that none of us would want to be told we could not marry the person we love. As pictures from Stowell’s military service fade in and out, he recounts it is freedom that he fought for as a marine -- and perhaps more importantly, “that’s what we believe in as Republicans.” He notes the universality of freedom, as he and his wife play with their young child in the foreground. In the most poignant portion of the ad, Stowell reflects on the catharsis that made him realize the importance of marriage equality. After learning his own brother was gay, he wanted for him to have the same right to marriage that he enjoys, hoping to be the best man at his wedding someday. The ad concludes with Stowell reminding us that marriage equality is only fair. This ad coincides with the increasing amount of Republicans who openly support the freedom to marry.
