WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Friend

Members:

In this series of impactful interviews with people speaking directly to the camera, this young African-American says, "I'm in high school. I think one of my boys is gay. He's afraid to talk to me about it. I think he's having sex, I don't know if he's using protection. We learn all about AIDS in school but we don't talk much about what it means gay and people can be cold. I don't give a damn if he's gay or not. He's my friend, I just want him to be okay."

This ad and others from the San Francisco AIDS Foundation only aired in the organization's home city. It is an unfortunate reality that no major condom manufacturers, government agencies or any AIDS organizations have created national messages to the American gay community. Most traditional broadcast TV networks also will not carry such messages if condom makers wanted to air them.
