WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

San Francisco AIDS Foundation, 49Neg

In this powerful series of interviews, various people speak directly into the camera. This middle-aged man says, "I'm 49, I'm gay and fortunately I'm HIV negative. But over the last 12 years I've lost nearly all my most beloved friends to AIDS. Not a day goes by without feeling the pain of so much loss, and sometimes it's almost unbearable. But I'm determined that I won't have escaped this virus only to be destroyed by grief. I'm proud of who I am, I'm proud of my community, and I've got a life to live."

This ad and others from the San Francisco AIDS Foundation only aired in the organization's home city. It is an unfortunate reality that no major condom manufacturers, government agencies or any AIDS organizations have created national messages to the American gay community. Most traditional broadcast TV networks also will not carry such messages if condom makers wanted to air them.
