WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

SABMiller, Dog

Members:

A seemingly macho man and his friends are standing around an older car with its hood up in the driveway. They are in mechanic-mode, as they focus on diagnosing a troubled vehicle.

One of the men's attention is diverted by a small white dog. He says to his friends, "Look at that little dog." The man switches to baby talk: "You're just a fluffy little doggy. Come here, I'll rub your little belly."

The dog-lover is subsequently squashed by a larger-than-life beer can, and the dog flees, scared. His friends are unaffected by the incident, to suggest the half-man met an appropriate fate.

The voiceover, in hyper-deep voice, says, "Men should act like men and light beer should taste like beer."

The ad earns a Negative rating because it suggests that a man shouldn't demonstrate excitement over "cuteness" unless he's ready to perish under a giant can of light beer.

They really should be called on the intense and implied violence in that ad. It really does excuse hate crimes and goes way too far into intense homo- and femme-phobia. It also trades on that dying stereotype that all straight guys are brutes with no taste. Outdated and cruel and stupid ads!!!

What this really should be saying in response to 'light beer should taste like beer' is 'gay men should act like REAL men'. It doesn't come out and say it but the real link is that somehow lesser men should appear or pretend to be like 'real' tough men.
Moreover, the ads aren't funny.
