Human Rights Campaign, Dick and Lynne Cheney

Members:

This straightforward ad from the Human Rights Campaign uses footage from a speech that Vice President Dick Cheney gave on Oct. 5, 2000. It is juxtaposed with footage of his wife, Lynne Cheney, speaking on July 11, 2004.

"Should we change the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage?" reads the title frame.

"People should be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to enter into," says Dick.

"People should be free to enter into the relationships they choose," agrees Lynne.

"I think different states are likely to come to different conclusions, and that's appropriate," argues Dick.

"When it comes to conferring legal status on relationships, that is a matter left to the states," says Lynne.

"I don't think there should necessarily be a federal policy in this area," concludes the Vice President.

"We agree with what Dick Cheney once said." reads the next frame, "And what Lynne Cheney just said," says the following. "Call your Senators." The HRC logo appears, along with the words, "Don't write discrimination into the Constitution."
