WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

T-Mobile International AG & Co. K.G., Couples Talk Free

Members:

A man and woman sit in their living room, looking over their cell phone bills.

"My cell phone bill is OUTRAGEOUS," he says. She replies, "Mine too!" He asks in an accusatory tone, "Who have you been talking to?" "You," she says. With suspicion, she asks, "Who have you been talking to?" "...You," he says, mystified.

Then a series of couples in their homes unfolds, going over the same discovery, with shouts of "You!" The anger builds, with one man shredding his bill, and another in bed with his wife, throwing the pages into the air hopelessly.

Tucked in between them all, the series includes two middle-aged men in their bathroom, one shaving his face. They are the only couple that isn't shown twice, and they only appear for a fraction over one second.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, the brand's longtime trademark spokeswoman, then says, "Come to T-Mobile, where couples talk free."

The very first time I saw this ad, I noticed the gay couple. Sure, I had to use my DVR to rewind just to be sure, but there they were in all their man-man relationship glory. I am glad that T-Mobile included the gay couple, even if it is for barely a second.

All the times I've watched this ad, I don't recall ever seeing the couple in the bathroom. I'll be on the lookout for them next time around!

I've seen it, but that part goes by so fast because of all the couples that are being shown. I'll look at the commerical again. I don't think it's been cut out where I live.

Go, T-Mobile! C'mon, it's a start. Even though it's only a second, the men aren't stereotyped.

Natasha
Wow, I've seen that commercial aired a bunch of times, and that part was cut out completely.

I've seen this spot dozens of times and never even noticed that one of the couples was same sex. I thought this was odd because I often look for this sort of thing when a spot unfolds around various types of couples. "Just over a second," makes me wonder if the agency was hoping we'd all be blinking during this particular "second."

The first time I saw this, I noticed this couple and was very pleased. When it was time to re-up with Cingular, we switched to T-mobile. Good for them!

Jamie
I thought these two were father and son.
