WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Electronic Arts, The Player/Dancing

Members:

This ad is a live-action version of a video game.

A handsome man in a club -- with a green diamond above his head, indicating that he is the first-person player of the game -- walks over to two attractive women at a bar. He gives them a big smile and a wink.

One of the women is appalled and slaps him across the face, sending his green diamond across the floor of the dance club. Another man picks it up and puts the diamond over his head -- making him in charge of the action, as in the video game.

The first man walks over to get back the diamond but now the second guy is "in control" and motions that they should dance. So with a look of "Why not?" the first guy begins to start dancing with him.

The female narrator then announces about the game, "New locations, new characters, new interactions" and the live action turns to video animation, as the two guys continue dancing together.

"Brace yourself. The Sims are dating," the narrator says.

The company's web site says the commercial aired on MTV, TBS, TNT and VH-1 in November and mid-December.

I LOVED this commercial when I first saw it! And it just made me even prouder of my gay Sims. :D (One couple just adopted their second baby! Wee!)

I am delighted with The Sims, for a while I wondered whether it was possible for two same-sex sims to have a relationship, and, after about half an hour, I have my first lesbian couple! I cannot say how pleased I am with EA's obvious open-mindedness and hope to be getting Sims Hot Date soon, wild same-sex censors here I come!

As a straight woman who thinks homophobia is revolting, I find ads like this refreshing and amazing. I adore my Sims, and have several gay families in my game (yes, they're offered the option of ADOPTION -- as are singlefolk, if they want it -- too bad it's not so easy in real life) and one of the reasons I bought it in the first place was after hearing that... not neccessarily that I was only going to make gay Sims, but I hate it how heterosexual is just the default (or only) option for most people -- including game designers and players. Good on Maxis for thinking outside the square in the first place, and an even bigger thumbs up for putting out an ad like this which could potentially cop a lot of flack. (After reading various Sims sites with homophobic statements today, really this is SOOOOO refreshing.)

This is a fairly old but wonderful commercial. I wish they would have released more ads like this, at least for Sims II and its expansions.

Even as a gamer I have to add that the content of the Sims and Sims II games themselves are some of the most gay-friendly games out there. I've played a lot of different games in many different categories and they tend to ignore us outright or just see our contingent as a non-issue consumer base. More game developers should think like Maxis!

I LOVE this ad!!! It's about time that homosexuality be portrayed in a "normal" light. As a bisexual woman, in a lesbian relationship for over two years, raising a 3 year old son, I find it refreshing that The Sims allows me to have a Sim-family that mirrors my own. I have had at least 4 families with the two females in love and a child. Often, my girlfriend and I will create an adult male, who is there simply to do all of the housework! =D THANK YOU MAXIS FOR SHOWING PEOPLE THAT HOMOSEXUALITY ISN'T A FILTHY TRAGEDY! It is normal, and very often, FUN FUN FUN!!!!!!!!!

What the hell are SIMS and why should we brace ourselves as the ad suggests? Is something gay (and shocking) going to happen just 'cuz two guys are dancing? A puzzling and obscure ad for non-gamers, into which a person who is unfamiliar with such games must read an awful lot of subtlety in order to suss out any gay content... but hey, if everyone else who's viewed it thinks it's gay-positive, kudos to the company selling the game.

I think it's great that people nowadays are more open-minded toward other people. I'm straight, and I used to be a gay basher, but after seeing that it doesn't matter if someone's gay or straight, I think gay people are just fine.

I own the Sims Hot Date, and surprisingly I didn't see this commercial until now. It is nice that Maxis/Electronic Arts has been impartial (good thing) towards gay relationships in the game. I'm on my way to having a gay couple in my game and although it isn't easy, It's possible :). Maxis is the pioneer so-to-speak in terms of being open-minded about what games should be for all game players of sexual preferences.

What a wonderful ad! As a bi woman, a huge video game nerd, as well as loving caretaker of several gay Sims :), it was so heartening to see a positive gay theme in a game ad. This kind of thing is actually beneficial to gay gamers. Queer gamers are the invisible of the invisible--the gaming community tends to be extremely sexist and homophobic, depending on what genre of games (sports gamers tend to be more homophobic than say RPG gamers) but things are slowly changing. This might sound really strange, but a straight acquaintance of mine who plays The Sims actually had his attitude about homosexuality changed for the better when he found out that he had a gay couple pair of Sims. Watching them interact just like the straight couple, even though it was a game, helped him become more open-minded in real life towards gays. It's not really strange for those who've played the game though. You really do grow attached to your Sims the more you play and watch them do little things in life. Kudos to E.A. for acknowledging the gay Sims, they should be free just like real gays. :)

Even the original "The Sims" allows two buddies to live and sleep together as a married couple, without mentioning the romantic or passionate kisses and mutual admiration of bodies in underwear. I've tried that two years ago. It takes a lot of chemistry, patience, humor, gifts and massage before the first kiss and subsequent interaction in a life-like LTR, but it is possible. The gay couple may even adopt a baby. The strange thing is: this possibility is not described anywhere in the game directions. Perhaps one of the programmers is gay and included some secret code in that game which would be found out only by gay people wanting to see what would happen if...:-). This programmer seems to have a perfect knowledge of gay men's actions and reactions and deserves my admiration.
