WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

SIDA Info Service, La Bibliotheque

Members:

Two young men in a library sit near each other. One says to the other, "You know the guy from last summer?"

The other shoots back, "I don't want to hear about that again."

Ignoring him, the first says, "He's got AIDS."
Now engaged, the other asks, "Have you taken the test?" His boyfriend doesn't answer, so he says, "We're gonna do it
together..."

You should have translated the tag line, "It's important to know." A good ad; a story in a minute.

The over-all message is wonderful: when in doubt, get tested! Part of me questions the intended implications of having a gay couple in an ad targeted towards the (mostly straight) mainstream. It could contribute to the idea that AIDS is a gay disease. But like I said, over-all the message is a very important one.
