WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Chupa Chups, No Smint, No Kiss

Members:

With the tagline "No Smint, No Kiss," this offbeat commercial melodramatically shows people (and one dog) avoiding kisses due to bad breath.

The song warbles "I want to kiss you, just kiss you..." and one member of each couple --including two men-- pushes the other away. The hero shows all the rest that he gets the kiss when he has a mint.

Smint incorporates a male couple into the mix of a bride-and-groom and older couple so seamlessly it could almost be missed. Such inclusion is not unlike that for African-Americans, who are now incorporated into mainstream ads for many major marketers today.

Being a part of vignettes as part of the mix likely signals what is to be found in the future of gays in advertising. Smint's ad has run on several cable networks.
