WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Saturday Night Live/Broadway Video, Gaystrogen

Members:

Always on the cutting edge, Saturday Night Live returns with another gay-themed ad following its 1991 Schmitt's Gay Beer parody and 2001 Homocil ad. Their newest parody, for Gaystrogen, keeps the stereotypes rolling.

Preppy-dressed Steven sits on the couch with glass of wine, a laptop, and two small dogs. His boyfriend sits down next to him, pushing the dogs off the couch without concern.

“Look, Russ, I found a new place for us to get our turquoise,” Steven says, drawing out the last word with effect.

“Don’t we have enough turquoise already?” Russ answers harshly, taking over the remote control and putting his foot on the coffee table. Steven looks befuddled.

“Have you noticed a dramatic shift in your interests?” asks a narrator.

Steven enthusiastically says, “Russ, I Tivoed the 'Gilmore Girls,' and I waited to watch it with you!” Russ walks past without a word, looking angry.

“Have you lost your attention to detail?” the narrator says.

While painting a dollhouse, Steven asks, “Russ, which color white should we do the trim? Candelabra, stucco, or rice?”

Rolling his eyes without a drop of patience, Riss snaps, “White is white, Steven!” Steven begins to cry asking, “Since when? Since when?”

Steven looks shocked as his own behavior as the narrator explains, “If you’re over 45 and a gay male, you could be suffering from queer-loss. Now there’s new Gaystrogen. Gaystrogen works with your body to replenish your natural gayness.” An animation of how the drug works as it enters the male body shows the pill reaching the genital area then turning the whole body into a swirl of rainbow colors (reminiscent of a simliar animation from the intro to the show "Queer As Folk"), then shaking his hips and waving his arms.

After taking the pills, Steven and Russ are shown entertaining friends together again -- sharing wine and turquoise jewelery. “Oh my God, where did you get this beautiful turquoise bracelet?” a friend asks Steven.

“It was a surprise… from me!” answers Russ happily. Steven and Russ kiss passionately in front of their guests.

“Get Gaystrogen and get back to your old self,” concludes the narrator. (The logo for the brand includes lavender letters for the name, underlined by a turqiose swoosh and an upside-down pink triangle.) The two men are shown laying together opposite ways on a small daybed.
