WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Alliance Atlantis, Fridays Without Borders

Members:

Two women sit in a hotel room. One pours from a flask, handing the glass to the other woman, who is wearing a wedding ring. The camera cuts to the TV set in their room, where a woman is shown swimming just as the television narrator mentions swimming naked.

In a high-angle shot, the woman are shown sitting on the bed where they partially undress and lay down as they embrace one another. Without dialogue, the women share an erotic intensity.

The screen fades to black. The women sleep side-by-side as sunlight filters into the room. Suddenly, the woman wearing the wedding ring jumps out of bed and pulls her clothes on as she runs out of the room. The other woman tries to stop her and chases after her. She stops at the door frame as the panicked woman drives off in a red car.

The camera then cuts to the hotel sign and marquee. It reads: "Fridays without borders. Air conditioned. Every Friday from 9 p.m. Vacancy."

A narrator then mentions the "evocative programming" on Showcase, a Canadian cable network, on Friday nights. The "Fridays without borders" catch phrase borrows from the network slogan, "Television without borders."

I think I have seen it on TV. I liked it.

It's a little challenging as I'm basing this on stills and a description. Spontaneously, I have mixed feelings that it's playing on "naughty" in a straight way, that is, one woman's married... is that what's breaking the border, or is it that they are lesbians. I like the pulling in of diverse ethnicity, but it's hard for me to see how their charachters have truly been depicted. Not very helpful.
