WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Ltd., Prison Shave

Members:

Different prisoners use a Panasonic shaver. After one prisoner uses the shaver, another prisoner touches his face and coos that it is smooth. Not liking the affection, the prisoner reaches to choke him and a full-blown prison riot ensues.

It boggles my mind that in the 21st century, Panasonic can think that homophobic violence is funny! It's just as uncool as violence against Jewish people or black people or women. Sickening!

I can't believe anyone would think this ad is about homosexuallity. The whole point is that these guys are supposed to be tough, since they are in prison. And the thought of this close shave makes them seem weak. That's the point. It's just like the commercial for the shaver used in the marines. Just take a deep breath and relax. I'm sure if you look hard enough you could find homosexual messages in your taxes.

I worry about the person who said this ad is not about homosexuality or about homophobic violence. If the ad had taken place in a tough bar, and a man had attacked a woman for coming onto him, we would call this a promotion of violence against women. We would not say, relax, it's all cool, this commerical is just about proving you are tough.

I didn't like it, but mainly because it was a stupid commercial. I don't think it's any more gay-positive or -negative than an episode of HBO's "OZ", but look at how many gay men have watched that show regularly (yes including me, when I had cable).

It's really more uncool as violence against Jewish people or black people or women WHO ARE GAY! Let's not segregate sexual preference. The ad is in poor taste!
