Organization for Gay & Lesbian Liberation, Two Men
A middle-aged man prepares for bed in his bathroom, brushing his teeth at the sink. Stepping into the bedroom, he removes his robe and gets into bed with his partner, who was reading a book.
They lean in to kiss each other, and then a black box appears to block them out, as if it were censoring an explicit act. Text appears in the box announcing, "Gay people have sex..." the box disappears, showing the two men laying side-by-side, each with a book in hand, as the sentence is completed: "...but not all the time."

I certainly enjoyed this ad. I've had an aquaintance who, when I finally told him I was gay, shyed away. One day I asked him why and he replied that everyone knew gays would jump any guy, straight or otherwise. I had to convince him being gay didn't mean you were some sex-crazed maniac willing to accost anyone vaguely male. This commercial shows gays as real people, which I think is the most important step we can take. We get old, we read in bed, and we don't have sex every night.

I like this ad. Gay men are all too often seen as inferior not only by straight men, but by straight womyn, bisexuals, transgenders, and lesbians as well. Gay men, such as myself, need to know that we are not inferior, and won't be treated as such.

I like the representation of an older couple - a rare thing in itself - which resists the ubiquitous body fascism of the commercial gay scene. Clearly, the message that gay people can, and do, have the ability to sustain a relationship - which includes sex but does not position it centrally - repudiates the dominant cultural myth of the gay man as sexual athlete or sexual addict. Exactly what we need.

I really like this ad because, for once, gay LOVE is shown in a sweet, non-sexual, way. I mean, it's hard enough being demoted to second-class citizen only because of who we love, but then to have it ASSUMED that we always have emotionless, detached, based-on-sex relationships makes it even worse. I mean, just because SOME of us (myself included) have had a lot of experience, it doesn't mean that we're incapable of REAL love between us. This ad shows that to be TRUE for once. It also shows that we can PURELY LOVE each other, which is a positive step for once, considering that most consider gay men sluts and whores, with no chance for redemption or change. FINALLY, someone gets it right by showing that redemption, love, AND commitment can exist in our world, and that the majority of us AREN'T the guys from Queer Eye OR Queer as Folk.

I love this commercial. It not only shows that gay men aren't so into sex that they have to have it every night, but it shows that they are just like straight couples. They love each other, they sleep together, but they're just a couple. I think that is a positive way to exhibit gay men and that makes me even more proud to be a gay man.
