WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Ohio State GLBT Student Services, Love Does Not Discriminate

Members:

This ad features three same-sex couples of different races and gender identities embracing under the caption, “Love Does Not Discriminate.”

Brett Beemyn, Coordinator of Ohio State's GLBT Student Services explains about this campaign that ran in the student newspaper and on the Columbus Ohio Transit Authority, “We want to make GLBT people visible to those who fail to see us. We also want to confront the intolerance and hatred that leads to discrimination and violence against individuals who are or are perceived as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. We think this image will get the message across that love isn’t bound by lines of gender, sex or race.”

He added, "There hasn't been much reaction, either positive or negative. I did several radio interviews, including for NPR, but we have only received a few responses -- all from supporters of the campaign. This surprises me. The ads are only on 30 buses (out of 200+), so I am sure that a good number of people haven't seen them. And, of course, people see what they want to see."

Funding for the ad campaign was provided by a $4,000 grant from the Coca Cola Student Project Funds, which is money generated through the exclusive marketing agreement reached between Ohio State and Coke.
