Shaw's Supermarkets, Pork Butt
In a stunt similar to the 1980s TV show "Bosom Buddies," two men who work for a grocery store are cross-dressed as women in a ladies restroom to spy on the competition -- one in a short black wig, the other in a long blonde one. The ad is part of a campaign series of six.
"Camera on tight?" the brunette asks the other in a deep voice. With a head shake, the blonde replies, "Yup." "Let's rock," says the first one, just as a woman starts to enter the restroom but quickly reverses in horror.
As the two infiltrators step out into the grocery store, one says, "Film everything -- and look normal." With her head in the butcher section, the blonde says, "Oh, they got more meat than we got!"
Then, as a female shopper goes past in surprise of the poorly cross-dressed men, the brunette says to her in a falsetto voice, "We're just admiring the pork butt." The blonde, head still in the meat section, raises up with offense at the comment.
The ads have caused some uproar in the transgender communities in New England, were the chain operates, and were pulled after just a few days.
Said a store spokeswoman, "The 'Choice is Yours' ads were created to raise awareness and build our variety and range image. The characters are meant to be perceived strictly as spies 'checking out Shaw's.' No other implication is intended."
