Respect For Marriage Coalition, Respect For Marriage-Leadership
A montage of couples and families of various ages and sizes, from an older couple sitting by a lake, to what seems to be a straight and lesbian couple walking their children down the street. The speaker proclaims that no one would want to be told they could not marry the person they love, and notes the growing support for marriage equality in America today. The ad goes on to a clip from former First Lady Laura Bush on the Larry King Show where she says, “When couples are committed, they ought to have, I think the same sort of rights that everyone has.” Other major Republican officials voicing their support for marriage equality depicted in the ad include former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. The ad wraps up with President Obama’s 2nd term inaugural address where he exclaims that, “Our journey is not complete, until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.” The ad’s slogan and twitter handle #Time4Marriage closes out the commercial. The ad coincided with growing Republican support of marriage equality among former elected officials. It is worth noting that following the release of the ad Laura Bush asked for her comments to be removed, despite having been on the record. A HuffPost article quotes the former First Lady’s spokeswoman Anne McDonald who said that Bush “did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated in any way with the group that made the ad.” It is unfortunate, that other high profile Republicans are finally coming around to publicly support marriage equality, yet Laura Bush has decided to remain silent once again. For the ad's consciousness raising aspects and positive support by major Republican figures it received 100%.
