WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

H.J. Heinz, Number 57 - Episode Three

Members:

With corny whistling music, father and his pre-teen son remain at the dinner table as the family has finished a meal.

Dad begins delicately to say to his son: "Now, mum tells me you want Timmy Stevenson to sleep over." The son looks on, unsure what his dad will say. "I guess the simplest way to put this is... Life's a lot like baked beans. You can have 'em straight or you can try them in all sorts of different ways..." With that, dad looks at his son intensely, heavy with implied double-meaning about sexuality.

Looking surprised at the implication, the son says, "Dad, I'm not gay." Relieved that the difficult discussion is over, the father smiles, pats his son on the back and replies, "Of course you're not. Of course you're not!"

The ad earns an Equal rating because the father approaches an explanation about sexuality to his son in a non-judgmental and accepting fashion, with a matter-of-fact but non-negative response from the son.
