WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Chips Scandinavian Co., Mix-Up

A burly man is grocery shopping, packing his groceries next to another man in a track suit.

The bigger man looks at his receipt and, without looking, grabs a bag. He rushes back to his apartment to see a sporting event that his friend is sitting on the couch watching.

While staring at the TV, he begins unpacking his groceries and pulls out a head of lettuce -- clearly this was not what he bought. He tells his friend, "I think I got the wrong bag." The other man jumps up, rifles through the the bag, pulling out the lettuce and beets.

Their sports plans ruined, the two men start screaming -- then the scene cuts to a shiny clean kitchen where two well dressed, flamboyant men hold up the two bags of chips in their fingertips and also begin screaming at the top of their lungs.

The tag line flashes, "No Kim's. No Joy."

The two gay men are stereotyped, but the ad cleverly doesn't play up their flamboyance, so much as different tastes between the pairs of men.

It's Norwegian, and I'm proud of it! We, in Norway, have embarassingly few good commercials but this one is ingenious!!

There is really nothing that suggests that the first pair of men aren't lovers too. Or perhaps the flamboyant men are just friends. It's all in how you make your assumptions. In the end, I love this commercial!

The interpretation of this ad assumes the first two men are not a couple. If they are, then it becomes one of contrasting stereotypes of sport fans versus yuppies.
