WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

In a celebratory family scene that is reminiscent of "Like Water for Chocolate," a large group of people of all ages are dressed up preparing flowers and warmly greeting each other for the big event, to the sound of happy Mexican music.

"Every year, we have a big family celebration to honor grandma and grandpa's anniversary," says a narrator. "This year marks their 50th. The family gets bigger and bigger, with children, grandchildren, and now, great-grand children."

"We always salute our grandparents, where our tradition began. Marriage and family is what Measure 36 is all about." (Well no, stopping others -- lesbians and gays -- from having their own families is what it is all about.)

This campaign included a number of targeted spots, including others for African-Americans and older people.

The constitutional amendment passed, with 57% of voters supporting the measure -- as they did in 11 states during the November 2004 election -- but it was the weakest win of any state. Like 37 other states that already had laws defining marriage as only between a man and a woman, amendment supporters feared a court could toss aside the state law.
