WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

KPN, Loving You

Members:

To the ironically happy tune of "Loving You," a series of couples are engaged in battle.

A woman leaves the car, shouting at the male driver. Two young girls fight at a bike rack. A woman chases a man out of a bar, fiercely shouting. A gay male couple argue on a beach, one holding a Chihuahua. Then the man even goes back and takes custody of the dog from his partner's arms. An elderly couple playing a board game ends when the man slams his fist on the board, sending the pieces flying.

Later, in follow ups to this commercial, there are happier conclusions for each storyline introduced here, where the fights are resolved on the phone for this telecommunications company. One of the couples is the gay couple. He is lying on the couch with the little dog sitting on his chest, talking to his partner and he lets the dog listen in on the conversation.

KPN shows their Dutch roots, a rainbow of clients, with a touch of humour. The doggie is a nice touch, without judging the couple.

Its nice that a gay male couple are included in this advert, but why do they have to be holding a tiny dog? Why not have one of the men tie his shirttails around his waist or wear high-heel pumps? I think this ad should be filed under "mixed message."

I liked it. Besides, a lot of gays own dogs, and even more importantly, those gays don't look like Advocate cover boys. Good for the telephone company, of course, in America they would never run this. "It's too negative," the client would say. "Couples fighting are not part of our corporate values, we bring people together, not apart." Lucky Europeans.
