In this spot for ESPN Magazine that ran on the cable network, sports fans of all races, ages and genders address the camera with a series of emotional comments covering hot topics, from possible baseball strikes to homosexuality, and one man says, "Homosexuals in professional sports should come out of the closet."

I like it--if he was saying "they should come out, it's no big deal." Given the audience they are speaking to, I admire them for making the effort.

I saw this ad. It seemed that the man was saying that the fans typically don't worry about the sexualities of participants in sports, and that the participants should throw off repression, both real and perceived.

If it means what we hope it means, great! The future of sports merchandising will have to embrace areas of the public who watch and buy...and participate! There are homosexuals who watch sports, like it or not, and ESPN (and everyone else!) will want and need their money. It's the future.
