WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Brasil Health Ministry, Boyfriend

Members:

A family sits quietly at home when the doorbell rings. Mom walks in to announce "It is him!"

Her husband gives his son sitting on the floor a look as he goes to the door to greet a handsome young man who says, "Hi! I need to talk to..." Dad interrupts him to say, "He doesn't want to talk to you."

The desperate fellow says, "But I need to talk to him." But the father will have none of it and simply replies, "Don't come back here anymore. He will not speak to you again" and closes the door.

Inside, the son asks, "So what, daddy? Is he gone?" His father nods his head grimly. Mom, sitting nearby, turns and says, "Son, you will find a boy who deserves you."

Then narration chimes in and says, "Respecting the difference is as important as wearing a condom."

This is a rare and important portrayal of a family supporting gay youth.

I love this commercial. It is no doubt one of my favorite ones. The image is very warm, and the message gets through clearly. I'm just disappointed that this commercial will be seen by so few people here in the United States. I'm sure it would change the minds of many people.

Everybody I know loves this ad! It was made with public resouces of the Health Ministry. It was on air in all channels here. One friend from Argentina saw it on my home and couldn't believe on it. Was amazing seing our government making a ad like this. Very good ad!

This ad is phenomenal. As a Latino immigrant, it is great to see both HIV/AIDS and queerness addressed in a Latin American country. I honestly don't know much about Brasil, or rather about homophobia there, but this ad was a very pleasant surprise. Hopefully, this will carry over into other countries in Latin America. And even into the us. It is certainly a good break from the kind of homophobic ads run by Vicente Fox (president) of Mexico. Oh, and I too got teary eyed.

Okay...hate to be goofy...but I teared up just slightly. If only my family was this supportive.

Pretty much every gay person I know, myself included, loved this ad. Not only it's a sign that the Ministry of Health has FINALLY noticed that there are gay teens out there being affected by AIDS, it also sends a very important message of acceptance and dialogue to families everywhere. The mother, specially, when telling her son he will find a boy that deserves him, indicates that this family treats his son, as a homosexual person, just the same as they would treat any one of their children, in a similar situation. VERY positive, and forward-thinking.

Truly superb. Next generation of gay ads, and then from a goverment! Cool.

Ron
Absolutely phenomenal. I was so impressed with this governmental response to safe sex.

Something really disappointing has recently happened. It was just published in Brazilian newspaper that this ad was actually banished back in 2002 by an Advertising Council. Such thing was only found out recently. Really sad. This ad is just wonderful. Nothing like this was ever made in Brazil again.

Pedro
It's unbelievable but this ad was censured here. It was considered inadequate, and against the "family." Yep, this is Brazil.

Ron
Wow! If only the USA would be so open.

Great positive message. I feel that this sort of positive promotion of homosexuality would be a great start to help address homophobic bullying.

Brian
Wow. This is a really great ad. I found it very touching that the parents looked out for their gay son as much as they would for a straight son or daughter. Good for Brazil. I hope other governments will present such a poignant message to their citizens.

Simply wonderful

I saw that as VERY positive, myself. Not only was it and ad for tolerance and safe sex, it's a government PSA from the health ministry. How many other countries do that? The USA certainly doesn't.

Martin
Gay oriented safe-sex tips and support from the family....I can only hope that one day American television would mimick this type of advertising!!!

Brazil's society and government have been stepping ahead of many countries in the world showing how to respect gays rights. The AIDS treatment is one of the best in the world and now this amazing commercial portrait of a tolerant society. Go Brazil!

I can only hope that American citizens will realize that when countries once so far behind us improve their human relations that, yes, some things really are universal.
