ViacomCBS, Sounds Like First Love
With musician Macy Gray warbling "I Try" in the background, a heartbroken teenage guy sits on the floor of his room, surrounded by CDs and posters on the wall.
He's making a breakup music tape, with songs such as "Love Hurts," "Fools in Love," "Nobody Loves Me" and so on. The camera then pans across his nightstand, revealing a picture of him hugging his former boyfriend with smiles during happier times.
He then underlines the song title "Why" by Annie Lennox on his homemade tape.
The commercial, a promotional spot for MTV, was one in a series about how music impacts people's lives. MTV won a 2000 award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for the ad's inclusive message.
MTV has set the gold standard among all advertisers for the most ads that refer to the community, more than 25 since 1996, in addition to carrying numerous gay ads from other companies and running its own supportive gay-inclusive programming.
