Google Inc., Same-Sex Marriage
Before France passed a law permitting same-sex couples to marry, it was being done another way -- by computer from Belgium, where it was legal first.
A French NGO called Together for Equality, or Tous Unis Pour L’Egalité, organized a series of couples’ unions as part of the commercial.
"We met in 1976. We've been together almost 40 years and we've seen things change for the better," says an elder man waling hand-in-hand down the street with his partner. "But one thing in France has stayed the same. The lack of recognition of our relationship and out love for one another."
Now seen in their home, flipping through old photos, he says, "We're not young anymore. We haven't got 20 years ahead of us and same-sex marriage is still not legal. We don't want to deny anyone their rights, we just want the same rights for everyone."
Others are quoted on TV news interviews saying, "The State has no business declaring homosexuality normal." Images of protests and police spraying the crowd are shown. "It opens the door to everything, even men marrying animals," says a young man in a TV interview. "These people must be locked up in jail for life," says a conservative woman.
Images of gay couples beaten up are also shared from the news.
The man continues, "We want to get married. But in France today it is still not legal. Then one day the phone rings...And we hear some news. Actually there is a way to get married in France by a Belgian mayor because in Belgium same-sex marriage is legal."
A series of couples are then shown saying "Oui" to each other in marriage and kissing, having tears and clapping.
