WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Swissair, Tie

Members:

In this rather bizarre commercial, a grotesque close up of people's personal hygiene while flying is presented. This includes clipping nose hairs, shaving, brushing of teeth, spraying breath freshener and curling eyelashes.

Instead of the traditional "buh-bye," a flight attendant repeats, "Good morning" over and over as customers exit the plane. People file out, and an Andy Warhol look-alike walks by, an Asian man who just bows, and others. The final one -- the joke -- is a woman with a man's voice and large Adam's Apple.

The tagline: "The world's most refreshing airline."

Unfortunately, this commercial is far from refreshing. It is employs the age-old joke of "Surprise, it's a man" and is very long in doing it. It also says little about the airline, which now is in bankruptcy and is expected to disappear as a brand.

Kind of a non sequitur, but the transgender person seems as grotesque as everyone else.

I remember seeing this ad and I thought that it ripped off Blade Runner's production values and it's creepy for an airline ad. The transgender thing is rather played down compared to the weird genre but I guess Swissair is saying that they have all types of passengers including drags. But wierd vibes from this one.
