WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Go Daddy Group, Lola

Members:

A flamboyant fictional retired NFL player Larry Jones re-named Lola stars in this ad created for the Super Bowl (but declined by the network). "Lola" has a website selling lingerie designs, the GoDaddy girl narrates that "Lola started chasing his biggest dream." "Ewweee!" squeals Lola.

“Of the five commercial concepts we submitted for approval this year, this NEVER would’ve been my pick for the one that would not be approved,” GoDaddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons said in a release. “This is about a guy who starts an online business and hits the jackpot. I just don’t think 'Lola' is offensive, in fact we didn’t see this one coming — we were absolutely blindsided!”

"Lola is a big, flamboyant, effeminate, lovable man,” Parsons added.

Daily Finance talked to GoDaddy Chief Marketing Officer Barb Rechterman, who said: "CBS gave us some language that basically said, 'This ad has the potential to offend viewers.'" CBS didn't say what made the spot offensive.
