WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Vernon Robinson for Congress, The Twilight Zone

Members:

The voiceover for the North Carolina candidate begins, "If you're a conservative Republican, while watching the news you may feel like you've been living in The Twilight Zone." Then the classic, discordant music from the TV show plays.

The narration continues with various complaints about America today, including illegal immigrants and "liberal judges rewriting the constitution." Following, the voiceover declares "homosexuals are mocking holy matrimony and the lesbians and feminists are attacking everything sacred."

The ad closes with Mr. Robinson himself saying he approves of "traditional American values."

Robinson did not win office.

The ad earns a Negative rating because it counts homosexuality among the factors contributing to America's demise.

Well, it's interesting to see how the other half thinks. I guess.

I know this is a negative ad and Mr. Robinson and his audience don't see the issues in the same way as I, but I think the image of the two young guys kissing is quite touching. Just having that photo and the one with the signs that say "God is a Dyke" out there and in people's consciousness is a good thing. Hopefully, they'll lose their shock value and somebody may wake up one day and say "what's wrong with it, anyway?"

It is quite clear that Mr. Robinson and his staff were not avid watchers of the Twilight Zone. The show regularly had episodes which espoused the value of protecting the rights of the minorities and challenged the idea of an executive branch with too much power. I think the estate of Rod Sterling has reason to sue if they want to pursue it.

Did Robinson's ad agency producing the commercial obtain copyright permission for the 1) "Twilight Zone" music and typeface, and 2) "Leave it to Beaver" clip? If they got permission, then that means the copyright holders approved of the message and we should express our disapproval to them. If not, then I think we should ask the copyright holders to sue the producers for tying their intellectual property to this message of hate.

I would like to think that Jerry Mather and Tony Dow would NOT approve of their image lending support to such a hateful message.

I remember seeing this ad online, and it was so insane and over-the-top that I assumed it was a joke. What really scared me was at the end when I realized that no -- they are serious.

Also, the sign "God is a Dike" made me laugh -- those stupid anti-gay Republicans don't even know how to spell "dyke." It's D-Y-K-E. Morons.
