WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

No on One Coalition (Idaho), Librarian

Members:

A librarian speaks to the camera, saying, "Banning books and spending money we don't have doesn't make sense. That's why I'm voting no on Proposition 1.

"Proposition 1 gives the state power to decide which books our kids can check out. We should leave that decision up to their parents. And it will force Idaho libraries to spend $20 million just to enforce it. We could use that money for more bookmobiles and children's story hour. So remember to read to your children and to vote no on Proposition 1."

Like commercials from other states in the political battle for protecting gay civil rights, this ad never mentions the words "gay" or "lesbian." It was a decision that proved controversial to some, who felt that the ads were too vague, while others felt that a broader approach was necessary to avoid turning off many voters.
