WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

French Connection, Fashion vs. Style

Members:

Two women, one representing "fashion" and the other representing "style," get into a glamorized fight in a basement-inspired arena, while Classical music plays. Both are trendily clad, and their martial arts are enhanced by special effects, as if they are part of a video game.

The women hurl each other across the room and tear each others' clothes off while demonstrating powerful kicks and skilled acrobatics, all of which seem to be exempt from gravity.

At one point, one woman buries and wiggles her opponent's face in her bosom. In retaliation, the other woman dunks her head into the toilet. When she emerges from the porcelain she swings her wet hair around for a windmill-like effect in slow motion. Soon after, she is pinned to a metal fence and kissed by her opponent. She retaliates with a head-butt. The screen reads, "Fashion v. Style."

The ad earns an Equal rating because it glamorizes a sexually charged female-on-female interaction. The kiss at the end of the ad suggests the symbolic union between fashion and style more than physical attraction.

I remember hearing that this ad was directed by Duncan Jones, aka Joey Bowie, heir apparent of camp.
