United Artists, The Christine Jorgensen Story

Members:

The Christine Jorgensen Story: The first man to become a woman. (This statement is far from true but it's the tag line of this film trailer.)

A 1950s media darling, Christine Jorgensen (John Hansen), formerly George, travelled to Denmark for a sex change operation. On her return to the United States, Jorgensen was celebrated in the media as the epitome of American femininity, but the press eventually turned on its star, dropping the glamour girl and adopting a more voyeuristic and paparazzi approach, attacking and shuning her from every angle.

Jorgensen's story, adapted for the screen from her 1968 autobiography, unveils many of the complex cultural fantasies around gender in Cold War America and reflects how trans people today are often still regarded as freaks.

This trailer is from the "Homo Promo" 1991 video collection of gay film trailers from 1953 through 1977 by Jenni Olsen.
