WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

USA Next, The REAL AARP Agenda

Members:

USA Next began a $10 million campaign accusing AARP of a "shameful record of liberal activism," such as the support of gay marriage. This Internet ad, which ran on conservative web sites, asserts that AARP supports gay marriage and includes a picture of two men kissing at their wedding with the words, "The real AARP agenda."

USA Next is accused of stealing the couple's photo. The couple in the photo, Richard M. Raymen and Steven P. Hansen of Portland, Oregon, demanded that USA Next stop using their image, and for a public apology for using their image in a homophobic and libelous way.

While the AARP doesn't have an official stand on gay marriage, USA Next Chairman Charlie Jarvis defends the gay-marriage ad by saying AARP's Ohio affiliate opposed a gay-marriage ban in that state.

USA Next was founded in 1991 as the United Seniors Association and has long positioned itself as "the conservative alternative to AARP," the 35-million-member retiree organization it is challenging over the Bush planned overhaul of Social Security and promotes itself as a conservative alternative to AARP.
