Studio 69 club - Almaty, Saghyrbaiuly and Pushkin
This controversial, illustrated outdoor poster for a gay bar in Almaty, cleverly called Studio 69, features a French kiss between composer Qurmanghazy Saghyrbaiuly with Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin. The club is actually located on the corner of Kurmangazy and Pushkin streets.
Havas Worldwide Kazakhstan has been sued over the work, which also won third place in an advertising competition. The $186,000 lawsuit was brought by 34 people from a conservatory and orchestra named after Qurmanghazy, who is a cultural icon in Kazakhstan. A court found Havas guilty of "advertising goods and services banned in Kazakhstan."
