WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Christian Dior, Fur

Members:

Christian Dior created a campaign featuring two men, The Wizard and Oliver, along with their female companion the Mouth, that caused some controversy as it implied a bisexual three-way among them. The campaign, which ran from 1982-1984, showed their escapades together, later leading to marriage between two of them, and a despondent "best man." The ads appeared in publications from Vogue to Playboy.

The text for this ad shows the woman sitting on a breakfast table in a fur and bright red lipstick, while the men sit in chairs in front of her, one in his pajamas with a lipstick kiss on his cheek, the other (a dandy) dressed in finery and drinking a glass of milk. The clock, notes 3:07, though it's not clear if it's a.m. or p.m.

The text reads, "Meet the Diors: Oliver, the Mouth, and the Wizard. They spent their weekends planning vacations they never took. The Wizard thought Greenland would be fun. Oliver raved about the Pine Cone Nudist Colony. ‘Divine,’ the Mouth replied when pressed, ‘but I haven’t got a thing to wear.'"
