WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

OUT, Out Town

Members:

Seated in a tall-back club chair with a cardigan sweater like Ted Turner, a father in an artificially low voice says, "Last week, our son told our family that he's gay. So we're giving him a subscription to OUT magazine."

"Now Dennis will always be on the cutting edge of lesbian and gay issues," chirps an overly cheerful mom from the kitchen.

"And OUT shows him what's in fashion and what's not," says the little sister as she plays with her doll.

Poised over the Thanksgiving turkey at the dinner table, the father asks, "Son, do you think your friend Julio would like to carve?"

The now-defunct ad agency that created this campy ad is the same that later created a campaign for the Gay Financial Network, gfn.com.

Brilliant! This is a "what if" commercial that's funny because it asks, "what if being gay was accepted?" It's only funny because of how unaccepted homosexuality is.
