Red Blue Project, Gay Marriage

A woman speaks to the camera: "I oppose gay marriage because I hate gay people. I believe that all the gays should be loaded up and shipped off to France where they belong. You know it says that in the Bible?"

Next, a gay man speaks: "I support gay marriage as part of our big gay agenda. Once we infiltrate the institution of marriage, we'll shut the straight people out. Then we can really get this party started."

The following text appears on the screen: "Not everyone who disagrees with you is an idiot."

The ad earns a "Stereotypes" rating because the gay man featured is highly stereotyped in a variety of ways. He upstages a rainbow-decorated sex shop. His stance is so extreme that it is hard to believe, whereas the prior speaker's state of mind is all too commonplace.

The ad wouldn't be as offensive if there were a diverse representation of actual gay people in the media. The message here is self-defeating because the commercial attempts to unite, but all it does is generalize about people on both sides of the ideological fence.
