I would have to say that this is an accurate heterosexually-oriented depiction of "stereotypical" gays & lesbians in 1987. Yep, they're gay, and being gay was still for people on the fringe, or radicals, or whatever you want to call 'em. GLBT issues were still taboo, and this ad represents a lot both positively and negatively -- positively because they had the guts to make it when they did, and negatively because they had to tone it way down. You can almost feel the frustration behind it, how much more they wanted to do with it.
