WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Diesel, Love Crash

Members:

The camera slowly moves forward up the aisle of a commercial airplane, toward the open door of the cockpit.

A sniffing sound is heard, then suddenly we see one pilot jump on top of the other in a fit of "romance." With no one in control, and as the other struggles under the romantic pilot's weight, the plane immediately heads into a nose dive and crashes.

A warning bell goes off with the sign, "The New Diesel Fragrance: Use at own risk."

Offbeat Italian fashion retailer Diesel has used homosexuality in its ads several times. Its TV spot featuring boy scouts won the Grand Prix prize at Cannes.

A faux World War II V-J Day print ad featured the former model-bodybuilder couple Bob and Rod Jackson-Paris, posed as sailors in a dramatic smooch in front of a battleship full of sailors. The ad, shot by David LaChapelle, ran in Out magazine and some fashion titles.

This ad doesn't make me want to by the fragrance or feel very positive about being gay.

Maybe in 1996, when open cockpit doors in flight were a reality, it was remotely funny. But in 2005, it isn't. At least to me.
