WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

Zola, Easy Wedding Planning

This cute and harmless spot featuring two women at the altar generated controversy and a double reversal by Hallmark Channel when it at first buckled to pressure by the so-called One Million Moms religious group. Days later it reversed itself.

"The Crown Media team has been agonizing over this decision as we've seen the hurt it has unintentionally caused. Said simply, they believe this was the wrong decision," Hallmark Cards CEO Mike Perry said in the statement. "We are truly sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused."

Ellen DeGeneres and William Shatner drew attention to the channel when it pulled the ad at first. DeGeneres asked: "Isn't it almost 2020?" Shatner wrote, "Put the commercials back!"

Zola initially submitted six ads to Hallmark Channel, and four included a lesbian couple. After Hallmark pulled just those ads, but not the ones with only opposite-sex couples, Zola said it pulled its remaining ads.
