DHL, Kitten Heels

Members:

An Average Joe-type peruses an array of high heels in a women's shoe store, though he is a bit challenged. It isn't clear why he's shopping. Comparing the weights of two, he notes to the saleswoman, "These are surprisingly light."

At another of his shoe shopping visits, a saleswoman in black leans over and breathlessly recommends, "You ought to check out the kitten heels."

On the next bench, a thin, older man also holding shoes, affirms, "The kitten heels are going to be hot."

The first man smiles, acknowledging his input, but when the older man smiles back, the fellow lightly cringes and turns away.

Then, the first man is seen finishing a presentation to two women in an office. "Wow, you DHL guys sure know your shoes. You even found a way to save on our shipping from China."

He adds, "And I hear kitten heels are going to be hot this year."

In a flashback to a shoe store, the man tries to reach into a box of shoes that a woman next to him is about to try on -- a reference to the sometimes cutthroat world of shoe shopping. The woman plops her foot into the box and slides it away from him.

This commercial could have avoided inclusion in our collection simply by skipping the suggestive come-on from the older man. The agency could also have simply left out the negative response from the DHL employee.

I don't think the look from the older man was a come-on. I think he was just waiting for a response from the first man and it was one of those "Really? Really." sort of unspoken exchanges.

I thought this was a clever and delightfully ambiguous ad. Perhaps the DHL man went back to the store to buy a pair of his own after thinking back on the older man's advice!
