WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBT EQUALITY

National Foundation of Infectious Diseases, Dr. Koop

Members:

The former U.S. Surgeon General appears with his trademark white tuft of chin hair. "I'm Dr. C. Everett Koop. If you are a homosexual man, you are at high risk of contracting hepatitis A, a highly contagious and debilitating liver disease that can last for months." An image of a man in silhouette laying in a hammock on the beach is shown.

He continues, "Travelers to developing countries can be infected contaminated through food and water.

"For homosexual men, the disease can be sexually transmitted." Once again, in silhouette, two men are running on the beach together. ""There's no cure, but now there's a vaccine to prevent hepatitis A.

"If you're a homosexual man, see your doctor, get vaccinated."

The spot was provided to national networks, and local gay TV programs nationwide. Koop served as U.S. Surgeon General from 1982 to 1989, and the hepatitis A vaccine (HAV) was introduced in 1995.

So can a man give it to a woman sexually? I don't know much about Hepatitis A, but this commercial sounds like they're targeting "gay" men more for spreading it, than to try to protect them. I don't really understand how straight people are any less likely to contract something sexually than gay men?
