Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Helen
"I remember the day we met as if it were yesterday," says a smiling woman named Helen.
A beautiful home is shown as she explains, "The house on Sycamore that we fixed up… birthdays… and graduations." She pauses, as two young children are shown, playfully hugging, when she ads, "Grandkids!"
The camera zooms in and her expression shifts from cheerful to sad. "When Rebecca died suddenly, I lost more than my partner because the life we built together was not legally recognized." Helen, Rebecca, and their two grandchildren walk hand in hand onscreen.
Their home appears, this time in sepia tones, along with a foreclosure statement.
"Only equality in marriage protects all American families -- gay and straight," says a narrator, as Helen hugs her granddaughter.
This ad was an entrant in the GLAAD competition for the creation of a commercial for gay marriage.
