WHERE SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING MEETS LGBTQ+ EQUALITY

Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Say Yes

Members:

This ad is one of several submissions into the GLAAD "I DO" competition. “I DO” is a national competition to create the best 30-second television commercial in support of marriage equality for same-sex couples.

This particular ad shows a gay couple at home, eating popcorn and playing a word game. When one man gets up to refill the popcorn and drinks his partner switches the game board with another and spells out something on the new board.

When the man returns his partner looks up at him lovingly. The man looks down at the board and sees what is spelled out: "ANDY WILL YOU MARRY ME." The O in YOU is replaced with a ring.

Andy smiles and looks at his partner. He nods, smiles, and says "yes." They hug and kiss.

The tagline appears on the screen written out in the game letters: "SAY YES."

Wow! This one really captured the genuine connection and honest love between these two men. Personally, I think that this intimate portrayal is more effective than the other portrayals from the larger context of a political civil rights movement in this series, because it effectively personalizes the issue, and makes the reality of same-sex relationships more tangible to the viewer. I would expect that this could have the potential to change many hearts as viewers would naturally relate this commercial to the emotions surrounding their own proposals of marriage.
