Debuted in 1975 as a moderately successful spin off of the "Mary Tyler Moore" show, Phyllis Lindstrom was Mary Richards' landlady in Minneapolis who moves back to her native San Francisco after the sudden death of her (never-seen) husband to make a new life for herself and her daughter.

A narrator intones, "Phyllis is on her own in a workaday world." (Inflation hit a high of over 14% in 1975.)

Cutting to a scene with her saying to her daughter, Phyllis says, "There don't seem to be any jobs left in this entire city." Her daughter asks, "What about that public relations job?" Phyllis replies, "What they're looking for is a half-Oriental, half-Mexican, gay atheist..." -- a jibe at the political correctness of a highly diverse city.
