Representing young executive angst, the headline over a man slumped in his couch reads, "Yesterday was a beaut... no lunch... boss in a mood. Hearing Ron's voice cheered me up... think I'll call him... today wasn't so hot either." Additional text running alongside the ad reads, "Whoever thought work was going to be so much work? Fortunately you have good friends to give you a lift."

While it could easily be argued that this ad only refers to simple friendship (unfortunately a rare theme for men in ads), through the 1980s it was common for same-sex partners to still be referred to euphemistically as a "friend" or "roommate." Other visual clues could argue for subtle gay implications to this "sensitive man," including his stylishly decorated living room table that includes Artforum magazine.

Other visual clues could argue for subtle gay implications to this 'sensitive man,' including HIS STYLISHLY DECORATED LIVING ROOM TABLE that includes Artforum magazine Is this not a heterophobic statement, endorsing the stereotype that heterosexual men are incapable of stylish decorating? I find this comment as offensive as many of the adverts I have read on this site.
